Real Classrooms. Real Impact.

Teaching Practice at Muhanga TTC gives student teachers the most important experience of their professional formation — time in real Rwandan classrooms, with real learners, facing real challenges. Our placement programme is structured progressively across all three years of training, building confidence, competence, and classroom identity from the very first year.

Every student teacher is placed in carefully selected partner schools where experienced mentor teachers and TTC supervisors provide structured, supportive guidance. This is not a trial — it is a professional apprenticeship that transforms capable learners into confident, effective teachers.

Assessment

Professional Practice

Professional Practice is a distinct component of assessment that contributes 30% of the overall assessment. Student teachers are assessed gradually from Year 1 to Year 3, with records maintained until programme completion.

The professional marks are combined with marks obtained from national examinations to form the overall assessment result. A student teacher must have professional practice marks to be awarded the certificate of successful programme completion.

⚠ Professional practice marks are mandatory for certificate award.

Year-by-Year Professional Practice

1
Year One
Foundation professional practice
a
Lesson Observation
Student teachers observe qualified, experienced teachers in partner schools. They study classroom management strategies, lesson delivery techniques, learner engagement methods, and professional conduct — recording detailed observations using structured TTC observation frameworks.
b
Microteaching
Student teachers practise teaching short, focused lessons in a supervised TTC classroom setting with their peers as learners. Microteaching sessions are recorded, reviewed, and discussed in structured feedback sessions — building confidence and refining technique in a safe, supportive environment.
2
Year Two
Partner school placement
Teaching Practice at GS St Ettiene
Year 2 student teachers are placed at our Partner Demonstration School — GS St Ettiene for a structured teaching practice placement. Under the supervision of experienced school-based mentors and TTC visiting lecturers, student teachers plan, deliver, and reflect on full lessons with real primary school learners. Weekly feedback sessions, lesson plan reviews, and formal observations ensure continuous professional growth throughout the placement period.
3
Year Three
School attachment & final examination
a
School Attachment and Reflective Practice
An extended school-based attachment in which student teachers take full professional responsibility for a class. Assessed by both internal TTC examiners and external examiners, this placement tests professional readiness across all domains: planning, delivery, classroom management, assessment, and professional conduct.
b
Teaching Practice Report
Student teachers compile a comprehensive professional portfolio and reflective report documenting their teaching journey, classroom challenges, professional growth, and evidence of learner progress. Marks are awarded for both the report quality and the actual teaching performance observed.
c
Final Lesson — External Examination
The culminating professional assessment: student teachers conduct a Final Lesson observed and assessed by a panel of internal and external examiners. This is the definitive professional competency examination of the programme — the moment where three years of preparation, practice, and refinement are demonstrated in a real Rwandan classroom.
